2008 Race & Practice Schedule

Welcome to Ottawa BMX Association

BMX (Bicycle Motocross) is for kids from 4 to 40 where similarly aged and skilled riders race each other on a dirt track of jumps and banked corners. It is for boys, girls, parents and friends, and it is one of the most exciting sports in the world. Ottawa BMX is a volunteer, non-profit association dedicated to facilitating BMX races in the Nation’s Capital. We are sanctioned by the Canadian Program of the ABA, and fully insured in Canada.

Race Recap: August 26th, 2008

It was a great night at the Ottawa BMX track as the conditions were very favourable with help from our volunteers and the new roller and water hose reel.

Our new races included Ben, Emily and Brandon, we would like to welcome these riders to Ottawa BMX.

The all girls moto started the evening followed by the cruiser class.  We saw a ton of excitement with the 7 year old intermediates as they had a very tight second race and two crashes in the third, and Blaise took home the win.

The 9 year old novices of Moto 6 also had a tight race between Ethan and Matthieu, with Mattieu taking hom the Total Points win.

Our final moto was by far the tightest race, Simon had led the pack in the mains until Vincent snuck in under the wire at the line to take First place in a photo-finish.

We hope to see you all out on Thursday for practice, as well as next Tuesday, September 2 for our final weekday evening race for the season. We will continue to race Saturday mornings for the remainder of the season in September and October.

Take our survey!

With only 9 races remaining in the 2008 season, we are asking both new and long term Ottawa BMX members to take a moment of their time and complete our survey.  We will use your feedback as best we can should it regard the physcal condition of the track, the operation of our weekly races, and any other topic you feel is necessary to provide feedback on.

So please, if you have a moment to spare, use the link located on the top of your screen titled "Survey" to answer a small number of questions.

Tentatively adding races to our schedule...

The executives here at Ottawa BMX have considered, debated, and decided to tentatively schedule races for the 2008 season to continue to the end of October.  We say tentatively for the sole reason that we will be watching our turnout numbers for each week in October as well as the weather.

Should the numbers be too low on a week by week basis, we will make the decision, and will make such announcement, to end the season as we see best.  However, should we have severe weather which effects the overall riding condition of the track, we maybe forced to make the decision to end the season before the end of October.

So what does this mean exactly?  In the end, more races for you.  The schedule as it is now for the remainder for the month of August and in September will remain unchanged, and we are simply adding additional races on the weekends in October.

We hope this excites our members as much as it excites us, as this will mark the first time in the clubs history to have a race schedule that stretches into October.  If it is deemed a success, we will continue this plan when making the 2009 schedule during the winter months.

These new races will be added to our online schedule, but will be clearly marked that they are tentative. So please, come on out to these races, and we will make the approrpriate announcements should we require to stop racing before the end of October.

Cools crashes hard in finals...

After the three Semi Final runs Sammy Cools had taken the fourth and final qualifying spot in her moto to transfer to the Final event.

When the gate dropped, Cools was right in the thick of things with the pack of riders going down the first straight, and that is where it all went wrong.  She seemed to have lost her balance going off one of the jumps resulting in a spectacular single rider crash, taking her out of any chance of medal contention.  As a result of the crash Cools received an official DNF for the race.

Below is a link to the BMX Finals recap.

Congratulations Sammy on being an Olympic Finalist.
